Objective (s): Given the increasing prevalence of addiction, the importance of measuring the level of mental health literacy among addicts and the limited studies on motivations for addiction treatment, the present study was conducted to determine the relationship between mental health literacy and motivations for receiving methadone among addicts.
Methods: In a cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study, 250 addicts referring to addiction treatment centers in Qaen town between October and November 2024 were selected to participate in the study through one-stage cluster sampling. The data collection tools included demographic and background characteristics, the Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire (MHLQ) and the Motivation for Receiving Methadone Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 23 software and descriptive statistics and logistic regression test.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of the mental health literacy score was 68.258±3.247 out of 145, which was at a low level. The mean and standard deviation of the motivation score for methadone intake was 19.126±3.362 out of 30, which was at an average level. According to the results of logistic regression, the variables of education level, amount of substance used, and mental health literacy were effective factors on motivation for methadone intake.
Conclusion: Motivation for methadone intake was lower among addicts with less than a diploma level of education, addicts with low amount of substance used, and addicts with lower mental health literacy. Therefore, it is suggested that more attention be paid to the aforementioned addicts in designing educational programs to improve motivation for methadone intake.
