Objectiv(s): One of the effective factors in the mental health of adolescents is their quality of life, and measuring the quality of life of adolescents, who are in a vulnerable developmental period, using existing tools plays a significant role in evaluating healthcare services. The aim of the present study is to determine the psychometric properties of the Persian short version of the Youth Quality of Life Instrument (YQOL-SF).
Methods: This descriptive study is a type of tool validation. The statistical population consisted of adolescents aged 11 to 18 years in northern Iran in the year 2021. From this population, 700 individuals were selected through purposive sampling and voluntarily and with informed consent responded to the short version of the Youth Quality of Life Instrument by Patrick and Edwards (YQOL-SF), the KIDSCREEN-27 health-related quality of life questionnaire, and the Birleson Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children (DSRS-C). This research included five sub-studies, and the data were processed using SPSS-24 and AMOS-24 software.
Results: The test-retest reliability of the Persian version (P-YQOL-SF) was 0.886 (p<0.0001) over a three-week interval. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the entire questionnaire was estimated to be 0.895. In the confirmatory factor analysis, the factor loadings of all 15 items of the P-YQOL-SF were greater than 0.30, and the fit indices of the modified Persian model (PCFI=0.757, PNFI=0.742, CMIN/DF=2.513, RMSEA=0.048, IFI=0.969, CFI=0.969, GFI=0.961) confirmed the one-factor model of the P-YQOL-SF. Correlation coefficients between the total score of P-YQOL-SF and the subscales of KIDSCREEN-27, except for the school environment, were higher than 0.30, ranging from 0.340 to 0.541. The same coefficients with the subscales of DSRS-C were obtained as -0.183. Normative data for P-YQOL-SF were established based on converting raw scores to standardized z and T scores and percentile ranks (n=700). The results of differential validity indicated that the total score of P-YQOL-SF in the normative group was higher than in the group of adolescents with physical-motor disabilities.
Conclusion: P-YQOL-SF is a reliable tool with satisfactory validity coefficients for use in the Iranian adolescent population.
