Objective(s): Postpartum depression is one of the common psychological problems of the postpartum period, which has many negative effects on the lives of women and their families, and identifying its risk factors can be a step towards improving the health of mothers. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of determining postpartum depression and its relationship with childbirth experience in primiparous women in 2023.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 402 eligible primiparous women visiting comprehensive health centers in Sanandaj city, who were selected as a cluster sampling.  The data collection tool included the demographic and clinical profile registration form, Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ), and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression test in SPSS26 software. P<0.05 was considered.
Results: The findings of the study showed that the average score of childbirth experience was 2.84 ± 0.55, and the prevalence of postpartum depression was 25.6%. Postpartum depression had a significant relationship with the level of education (p=0.05), hospitalization due to postpartum complications (p=0.05) and type of infant feeding (p=0.05) and with the increase in the score of childbirth experience, Postpartum depression decreased significantly (p=0.001).
Conclusion: The rate of postpartum depression was relatively high, and factors such as the level of education, hospitalization of the mother due to postpartum complications, and type of infant feeding were related to it. Also, there was a negative and significant relationship between childbirth experience and postpartum depression, and creating a good and pleasant experience for mothers during labor and delivery reduced the incidence of this disorder.
