Objective(s): Evidence suggests that nursing students, despite enrolling in the program with reasonably suitable levels of motivation, experience a decline in their motivation during subsequent academic semesters. Lack of academic motivation among these students leads to poor academic performance and a decline in the quality of future healthcare services. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine and identify the factors associated with academic motivation among nursing students.
Methods: This scoping review encompasses domestic and international studies that investigate factors affecting the academic motivation of nursing students. Searches were conducted using relevant keywords across several databases, including PubMed (Medline), Web of Science, Scopus, and ERIC for international studies, and SID, and Magiran for domestic studies, along with search engines Google and Google Scholar. The search was conducted from May to September 2024. Inclusion criteria comprised articles published within a 20-year period (2004–2024) in either Persian or English, focusing on factors related to academic motivation among undergraduate nursing students. Eligible studies included original research and review articles with full-text availability.
Results: The initial search identified 43,335 articles, of which 45 were thoroughly reviewed. Most studies reported that nursing students’ academic motivation was moderate. Positive academic outcomes among nursing students were strongly correlated with academic motivation. Influential factors promoting academic motivation included support and positive attitudes from instructors and family members, the quality of teaching and learning environments, instructors' scientific and practical competencies, and personal goals such as achieving self-esteem, earning respect, and contributing to the well-being of others. Conversely, factors contributing to diminished academic motivation encompassed social and communication barriers, challenges within the nursing profession and education system, as well as students' personality traits and demographic characteristics.
Conclusion: In summary, nursing students' academic motivation is shaped by a multitude of factors. Identifying and addressing these factors can enhance academic motivation and foster positive educational outcomes. Supportive measures from instructors and family, alongside improvements to educational environments, are effective strategies for bolstering nursing students' motivation.
