Objective(s): According to the World Health Organization, inactivity is significantly high in adolescents worldwide and is more common in girls than boys. In order to design and implement interventions to increase physical activity, it is necessary to identify the factors affecting physical activity in each age group. Therefore, in this study, the effect of educational interventions based on the Pender Health Promotion Model using two multimedia methods, web-based and booklet, on physical activity of female elementary school students (second grade) in Bushehr was evaluated and compared.
Methods: This study is a quasi-experimental study that was conducted among 90 female students in the second year of elementary school in two groups of web-based and booklet-based education and a control group (30 students in each group - average age 10 years) in six schools in Bushehr that were randomly selected. Educational content based on the Pender Health Promotion Model structures was presented in the form of a booklet for one group and in the form of multimedia on the web for the other group. The samples were assessed by the standard physical activity questionnaire PAQ-C and a questionnaire related to the health promotion model structures before, two weeks and three months after the educational intervention. The collected data were analyzed using the chi-square test, one-way analysis of variance and repeated-measures analysis of variance in SPSS version 22 statistical software.
Results: The findings of this study showed that after the educational intervention, significant changes were observed in all constructs of the Health Promotion Model, as well as in physical activity behavior in the web-based group. Additionally, in terms of perceived barriers, perceived social support, and physical activity behavior, the booklet group showed significantly greater changes than the control group (P-value < 0.05). Comparisons between the web-based and booklet groups revealed that changes in all constructs of the Health Promotion Model and physical activity behavior were significantly greater in the web-based group than in the booklet group (P-value < 0.05).
Conclusion: The educational intervention based on the constructs of the Health Promotion Model was effective in encouraging female students to engage in physical activity behaviors and enhancing these behaviors. It appears that the web-based multimedia educational approach is more effective than the booklet method for adolescent girls.
