Objective(s): Aging is manifesting as a major global issue. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the relationship between the use of social networks with quality of life and depression in the elderly of Tehran in 2023.
Methods: The was a cross-sectional study that was conducted on a sample of 235 elderlies who visited selected health centers and met the inclusion criteria. A demographic questionnaire, a social network usage questionnaire, a Persian version of the CASP-19 elderly quality of life questionnaire and a Persian version of the elderly depression questionnaire (GDS-15) were used to collect data. Also, statistical analysis was done using SPSS-26 statistical software.
Results: The mean age of participant was 64.82 ± 3.61 years (range 60-84), and 55.7% were women. The mean score of social network use was 20.29±3.87 out of 65, the total quality of life score was 38.27±8.29 out of 57, and the total depression score was 6.43±1.72 out of 15. In addition, the use of virtual network was significantly associated with decreased quality of life (P<0.001). However, the use of virtual network did not show significant relationship with the level of depression of the elderly (P=0.235).
Conclusions: It seems that the use of social networks might decline the quality of life of the elderly while no apparent significant association was found with increased depression.
