Abstract:   (35 Views)
Objective(s): Patient-centeredness, a key dimension of healthcare quality, has become a global priority. However, a universally agreed-upon and comprehensive definition for patient-centeredness remains elusive. This research aimed to provide a clear concept of patient-centeredness and determine its dimensions.
Methods: An scoping review was conducted. We searched six databases using relevant keywords to identify articles published between 2000 and 2023 that addressed the concept and aspects of patient-centeredness. A total of 43 articles were selected and data analysis was performed by thematic analysis method using MAXQDA software.
Results: The reviewed sources provided 65 definitions of patient-centeredness, with the Institute of Medicine's definition being the most widely used. Similarly, 45 elements were identified. Thematic analysis grouped these dimensions into eight core areas: 1. The patient as a unique person 2. Patient engagement and respect for preferences 3.Integrated and continuous care 4. Education and effective communication 5. Access to care 6. Well-being and physical comfort 7. Emotional support 8.Participation of family and friends
Conclusion: Recognizing the multifaceted nature of patient-centeredness and its various dimensions is crucial for realizing patient-centered care. The Ministry of Health can significantly enhance the quality of care and patient experience by developing and disseminating a comprehensive patient-centered executive framework with specific requirements for healthcare institutions and service providers.
