Dear Editor,
Before the 1980s, road safety policy to stop deaths caused by traffic accidents was based on the principle of promoting the safe behavior of road users. With the passage of time and the revelation of the shortcomings of this view, significant changes in the way scientists and experts think about road safety emerged and a safe system was introduced. The first step to creating a safe system is to change the mindset in the scientific and executive field of road safety. In this regard, there is a need to accept an important moral principle which states: No human being should be seriously injured or killed as a result of a traffic accident.
It is necessary to adopt a new approach to addressing road traffic injuries, focusing on a safe system. Considering the beginning of the second decade of action for road safety and the effective performance of the safe system approach in reducing traffic crashes and improving road safety, it is recommended that the safe system approach be considered in developing the strategies and actions to prevent road traffic crashes and improve road safety.
