Abstract

Objective(s): To determine awareness of managers of private hospitals about patient rights and its effective factors in Tehran, Iran.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among all managers of private hospitals in Tehran (N=35), using a questionnaire including 32 questions. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistical procedures.
Results: The results showed that 23% of managers had good level of awareness. However, 54 % and 23% of them had intermediate and low level of awareness regarding patient rights, respectively.
There were four effective factors on awareness of the managers about patient rights including educational degree, discipline, academic institute and training in management.
Conclusion: 77% of the managers had less than good level of awareness regarding patient rights. As awareness could be a proxy of consequent behavior, therefore it could be predicted that the managers might perform inadequately in their responsibilities related to patient rights.
It seems that there is need to promote awareness on patient rights among hospital managers.

Abstract


Objective(s): To explore difficulties existing between private hospitals and other health related organizations such as Ministry of Health, Medical Council, Emergency Center, State Forensic Medical Organization, and insurance agencies in Tehran, Iran.
Methods: A descriptive study conducted for assessing the most frequent difficulties and expectations which exist between private hospitals and other health agencies in Teheran. The study population consistsed of 40 private hospitals in Tehran of which the required sample was obtained randomly. A questionnaire was developed as an instrument for data collection. Questionnaires delivered to senior managers including hospital managers, chief executive officer, technical managers, and matrons.
Results: In all 20 private hospitals included in the study. The majority of senior managers of private hospitals demonstrated a unified views toward the problems. Insurance agencies and Ministry of Health were the two most important external organizations involved with difficulties experienced by private hospitals. Social Security Organization and Emergency Center were the two organizations that managers indicated as non problematic.
Conclusion: The existing difficulties for private hospitals seem to be structural. There is a great need to reorganize the relations between private sectors' and public agencies in health system in order to keep both efficient.

Abstract


Objective(s): The survey of relationship between manager's spirituality and spirituality at work with staff and patients satisfaction in Qazvin University of Medical Sciences in 2008-2009.
Methods: This descriptive study  the analysis of 30 higher and middle managers and operational category system, 135 hospital employees (administrative, support and medical) using stratified random sampling 165 inpatient hospitals in the University of Medical Sciences simple random (without replacement) selected and participated in this study.
The relationship between spirituality and satisfaction of patients and personnel managers using questionnaires 4 reviews spirituality managers (including two dimensions and then describe the spiritual dependent), spirituality at work (after three individual, organizational and business unit), patient satisfaction and staff after used to confirm validity and reliability and ultimately using descriptive statistics and prevalence and frequency of Pearson correlation test Statistical analysis of data established. 95 percent confidence level was considered.
Results: The mean age of participating managers 40.46±6.65 and the average experience in management 11.85±6.03 and current experience in the hospital 19.25±7.00 respectively. Correlational measures suggested a linear significant relationship between personal spirituality dimension at work in the section of work concept with spirituality correlation dimensions are (P=0.041) and linear relationship between business units work spirituality with total dimension spirituality are significant (P=0.045) and spirituality at work and directors spirituality in the majority of work samples and moderate significant relationship exists between them (P=0.05) and between patient satisfaction and dimensions of nursing care related to spirituality is a significant relationship between staff satisfaction and descriptive dimensions, dimensions related to spirituality and spirituality total there is a significant relationship (P<0.05).
Conclusion: One of the important dimensions of hospital performance internal and external customer satisfaction (patient and staff) are the managers and the spirituality of nature and a spiritual atmosphere in the workplace can influence affecting patients and staff is satisfied. Spirituality in health, peace, concentration and sense of caring for patients care is ensured and integration of spirituality in health services organization flat hierarchy, and sense of participation in the society fosters.

Abstract

Objective(s): The purpose of this study was to explain and present a model of managerial competencies affecting the performance of social security hospitals in Tehran, Iran.
Methods: This was a qualitative study. A purposive sampling was applied. The participants were senior managers of social security medical centers and experts in hospital management and administration. Data was collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and continued until saturation. A thematic approach was used to analyze the data.
Results: The results led to the identification of 4 comprehensive themes, 10 organizing themes and 40 basic themes. Comprehensive and organizing themes included knowledge and work experience (specialized knowledge, general knowledge, work experience), individual characteristics (moral characteristics, personality traits), interactive competencies (communication skills, internal-organizational communication, external-organizational communication), and executive competencies (managerial competencies, leadership competencies)
Conclusion: The use of identified themes can be useful in employing competent managers or be used as the basis of routine in-service training courses for hospital managers in medical centers.

Abstract

Objective(s): Designing the living environment according to the needs of the elderly can play a significant role in creating a high quality for them. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the status of the standards of the age-friendly city in Kermanshah from the perspective of the elderly and managers.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 1401 with the participation of 384 elderlies over 60 years and 36 city managers in Kermanshah. Older people were included in the study using the random cluster sampling method and managers by census method. The data collection tool was the WHO's age-friendly city evaluation checklist.
Results: The overall score of Kermanshah was 2.55 and 2.33 from the point of view of managers and the elderly, respectively, ranging from 1-5. The highest score was related to communication and information (2.8) and the lowest score was related to civic participation and employment (1.94). There was a significant difference between the views of the elderly and managers in transportation, social participation, citizenship and employment participation, communication and information, and health and local services (p=0.00). Also, there was a significant relationship between the total score of the age-friendly city and gender (p=0.05), marital status (p=0.03), employment status (p=0.01), living arrangements (p=0.00), and the number of children (p=0.04).
Conclusion: The status of an age-friendly city for Kermanshah is such that there is a need to carry out interventions in all domains and all urban districts in order to adapt the city to the needs of the elderly.

Abstract

Objective(s): Hospital staff performance in management positions significantly affects cost-effectiveness, service productivity, and the hospital’s success. Evaluating management performance at different levels could identify their strengths and weaknesses and discover their training needs. The current study aims to evaluate the performance of hospital managers in Ahvaz, Iran.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, which was conducted in 13 public (teaching and non-teaching) and private hospitals, 11 top managers and 162 middle and operational managers were selected using census and stratified sampling methods, respectively. The data was collected by a questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of two sections: demographics and the study main variables (planning, decision making, organizing, coordinating, communicating, controlling, leadership and budgeting). The data were analyzed using the 23rd version of the SPSS software.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of the planning, decision-making, organizing, coordinating, communicating, leadership, controlling, and budgeting were (3.91±0.75), (3.98± 0.64), (4.06±0.71), (4.05±0.67), (4.03±0.62), (4.00±0.74), (3.99±0.67), and (2.99±1.21) respectively. In general, the mean overall performance of Ahvaz hospital managers was 3.88 out of 5. The best reported were in organizing and coordinating, and the weakest were in planning and budgeting performance.
Conclusion:  In general, the self-reported performance of Ahvaz hospital managers was relatively good. However, more training, especially in planning and budgeting, is suggested.
