Objectiv(S): Given the high rate of premenstrual syndrome among female students and the relationship between health literacy and adopting preventive behaviors, and the limited studies on the relationship between these two variables, the present study aimed to determine the relationship between health literacy and adopting preventive behaviors for premenstrual syndrome among female students.
Methods: In a cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study, 230 female students studying at Qayenat Faculty of Medical Sciences in 2023 were selected to participate in the study through stratified random sampling. Data collection tools included demographic and background characteristics, the Health Literacy of Iranian Adults (HELIA) questionnaire, and the Premenstrual Syndrome Preventive Behaviors Assessment Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 23 software and descriptive statistics and logistic regression test.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of the scores for adopting preventive behaviors for premenstrual syndrome and health literacy among students were 33.531±5.372 out of 50 and 79.848±12.159 out of 100, respectively, and both were at a desirable level. According to the results of logistic regression, the variables of mother's education level, family economic status, and health literacy were effective factors in adopting preventive behaviors.
Conclusion: Adoption of preventive behaviors for premenstrual syndrome was lower among students whose mothers had a lower education level and were illiterate, whose families had unfavorable economic status, and whose students had limited health literacy. Therefore, it is suggested that more attention be paid to these students in designing educational programs to promote the adoption of preventive behaviors for premenstrual syndrome among students.
