Objective(s): Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that affects women. It can lead to physical, mental health, and premenstrual symptoms. Recognizing the symptoms of the syndrome is crucial for early diagnosis, which greatly contributes to the overall well-being of those affected. This study aimed to examine the effects of polycystic ovary syndrome on general health and premenstrual symptoms.
Methods: In 2017, we conducted a case-control study on 340 women between 15 and 20 years. The participants were selected from clinics and schools in Shiraz by cluster random sampling. We divided them into two groups: 170 patients and 170 healthy individuals. The study involved completing questionnaires related to demographic characteristics, Goldberg's general health, Rotterdam Polycystic Ovary Diagnosis Criteria, and physical and mental symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and chi-square tests with SPSS version 18 software, and a significance level of 0/05 was considered.
Results: The analysis of data showed that the PCOS group had significantly higher average weight and body mass index (P < 0.001). Premenstrual edema was more prevalent in the PCOS group (P = 0.003), and they also had lower scores on There were no significant differences in height, age at menarche, and GHQ score between the two groups.
Conclusion: The health of women with polycystic ovary syndrome should be carefully and comprehensively considered. Physical issues such as being overweight, obesity, and hirsutism, as well as menstrual disorders, can gradually affect mental health in the future. Therefore, it is important to pay more attention to the lifestyle and symptoms of the syndrome from a young age.
