Objective(s): To examine the relationship between schoolbag weight and students' body weight in primary school students in Ramadan.
Methods: 558 students (270 girls, 288 boys) in primary schools of Ramadan were selected by random sampling. Their bodies and bags were weighed.
Results: 12 percent of children carry bags weighting more than 10% of their body weight, while 88% carry lighter. In comparison with other countries such as Australia, Italy, Canada and even the US, where children carry bags weighting up to 30-50% of their body weight, primary students in Ramadan carry rather lower weight.
Conclusion: The school health care professionals should devise programs for educating students about how to select the bag and how to load and carry it.
